Joel Buchalter, MD, recently discussed how he has reduced infection risk during joint replacement surgery by keeping the air in the operating room clean, according to a news release. He recommends a clean air environment, which is different from regular air ventilation systems. He says the best way to avoid infection includes:

  • Using high-efficiency particulate air filters
  • Maintaining positive pressure to stop particles from spreading
  • Administering antibiotics before and after surgery
  • Shortening operating time
  • Minimizing traffic through the OR
  • Employing strict sterile technique
  • Wearing total body exhaust suits
