Joel Buchalter, MD, recently discussed how he has reduced infection risk during joint replacement surgery by keeping the air in the operating room clean, according to a news release. He recommends a clean air environment, which is different from regular air ventilation systems. He says the best way to avoid infection includes:
- Using high-efficiency particulate air filters
- Maintaining positive pressure to stop particles from spreading
- Administering antibiotics before and after surgery
- Shortening operating time
- Minimizing traffic through the OR
- Employing strict sterile technique
- Wearing total body exhaust suits
